MATCH PREVIEW: MOTHERWELL VERSUS SAINTS

MATCH PREVIEW: MOTHERWELL VERSUS SAINTS PHOTO: Danny Swanson scored in the last match between Motherwell and Saints - a 2-1 win at Fir Park on 7 May.

After Wednesday night’s sensational 3-2 win over Hearts in the Betfred League Cup, attention now turns to the second weekend of the Ladbrokes Premiership.

St. Johnstone travel to Fir Park to take on Motherwell tomorrow (Saturday), where Saints will be hoping to pick up their first league win of the season following four wins in the League Cup so far.

While we drew 0-0 with Aberdeen last weekend, the ‘Well got their season off to a flyer by picking up 3 points against Kilmarnock with a 2-1 win at Rugby Park. The North Lanarkshire side, though, will be looking to bounce back from a 5-0 drubbing at Celtic Park last Wednesday on cup business.

Meetings between the sides in recent times have been extremely close with Saints just edging the head-to-head over the last five seasons with a win ratio of 47.3% to Motherwell’s 42.1% from 19 matches, with 2 draws.

At Firs Park the hosts have had the upper hand with 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses against Saints, however in the last 4 matches there St. Johnstone have won two, drew one and lost one.

Injury-wise, Tommy Wright will be hoping to welcome back Murray Davidson and Graham Cummins who both missed the Hearts match through injury. Tam Scobbie, who went off at half-time in that match, will be assessed before travelling tomorrow.

Danny Swanson, who fired two goals past the Jambos this week, said of the trip to Motherwell: “We won there last year, 2-1, but it’s not an easy place to go. I’ve seen their highlights (versus Kilmarnock) and they looked sharp so we’ll need to be at our best to beat them.

“But we’ll be going there for the 3 points.”
